The Wounded Name fic
15/2/26 12:00In Which Laurent Rises to the Occasion
The Wounded Name -- D. K. Broster
Laurent/Aymar, Amyar/Avoye
Canon divergence, Pre-Poly
Aymar despairs of clearing his name and leaves France, leaving only a letter behind.
Laurent is so delightfully himself, burning with passion for all the things! For Aymar! To clear Aymar's name! To tenderly care for him! And also to straighten out this mess where Aymar is determined to throw himself on his sword for Avoye's sake, without first consulting with Avoye about whether she even wants that! (If there is one thing that Laurent has learned from his association with Aymar, it is the frustration of having a lover throw himself on his sword for you without asking first! NOT THAT THIS FLEETINGLY CRITICAL THOUGHT MEANS HE LOVES AYMAR ANY THE LESS!!!!!!!)
I have strong suspicions as to who wrote the story (*casts a meaningfgul glance in

Lash Larue
14/2/26 12:27Way back in 2008, when I was pretty new to LJ and didn't quite know how it worked, I saw that I had a friend request from someone named
lash_larue. I didn't know them, but the name intrigued me, because only an old movie buff (like me) would even have heard of Lash Larue, and only a funny and interesting person would choose LL as their pseudonym.
So I friended lash_larue back, and it was one of the best fandom moves I ever made. In addition to being a fine writer and a stalwart supporter of all her friends' LJs and fests and fics, Lash was a wonderful human being, kind and generous, who became a close and valued friend.
You've probably taken note of my use of past tense above. I'm so very sorry to report that
lash_larue died of complications from COVID and other conditions on Tuesday, February 10. Her beloved wife P was with her when she passed peacefully in the hospital.
I can't tell you how much I'll miss Lash. She was so damned funny, so refreshingly outspoken, so considerate, so larger-than-life, such a vivid presence both on LJ/DW and in RL. She'd call me periodically, and we'd bemoan the state of the nation, but she never failed to have me laughing by the end of the conversation. She was always there with emotional support and wit and wisdom, and the loss of her is huge.
I met Lash once in person, in Florida at an HP fandom gathering she organized at a rented house we called "Crone Manor." "Fun" doesn't begin to describe it. She went all-out to make sure everyone had a wonderful time, and we did. Just one of her many lovely gestures: I had mentioned on LJ that I love flower-flavored foods, and Lash made me an utterly delicious rose-flavored cheesecake. That's just a tiny example of her exuberant generosity.
And did I mention that she was funny? Outspoken? Read the opening paragraph of her description of herself on her LJ profile. It's the essence of the Lash I knew and loved.
Just a human being who occasionally steps through the looking glass. I am WAY over 18. I have socks over 18. I was born in the USA and right now I'm not too proud of that. In the 1950's, barely, like early. Just now I'm not very proud of that. I wrote a crack!fic about Kennedy and Kruschev in third grade and got detention for it. I haven't changed much.
If you are one of Lash's online friends, or if you ever read and enjoyed one of her many excellent stories, or if you had the pleasure of meeting her in person, you'll know just how much both the fandom world and our real world have lost.
And another "if" -- If you have the chance this weekend, lift a glass of your favorite whatever in memory of our dear, irreplaceable
lash_larue.

10/2/26 10:12I'll post more about this later when my listing is live, but I took the plunge and signed up to offer fic for the 2026 Fandom Trumps Hate charity auction. Because shit is rough out there right now.
My current fandoms are small enough that it was a little bit of a conundrum about what to offer, but I went with:
Broster novels, Hornblower, and Vorkosigan Saga.
Fingers crossed!
For a couple of years now, I've been reading The Flight of the Heron to
Consequently, it wasn't too long before we decided on two to three sentences a day, with an option for four if I asked nicely first. (Always granted, for she is a gracious person.) That has gone much better.
It's been a lot of fun. It's a lovely excuse to say hello to Phoenix every day, and the novel bears up well to close reading. It's also encouraged me to look up all the things I gloss over at speed, which has had some interesting surprises. (When BCP suggests that letting Ewen accompany them to Lady Easterhall's will bring the party to four and make them a partie carrée, he is making a dirty joke! That they will be a perfect foursome, two men and two women! I imagine them all side-eyeing each other, trying to figure out who the women are supposed to be. “As your Highness pleases, of course,” said O’Sullivan stiffly.) There's also been a lot of time to spin pet theories and get attached to minor characters. (Saunders, Lady Easterhall's servant with the cough, is a favorite.) I've also been able to introduce her to relevant fic as we went, which has also been an opportunity for me to revisit them, too.
Since we've been very consistent, only taking a break when I was in Japan, we have been making good progress. As of this weekend, I can report a milestone: we have just now completed Part II! Hurrah us!
With the move to Part III, Phoenix is anticipating a tonal shift and thus has authorised a whole paragraph a day. (With two or even three paragraphs authorized in dialogue sections!) So we will be cruising along, and finish in... well, it will still be years. But not as many years!
On to Part III! Hurt/comfort, here we come!
got through the weekend
8/2/26 19:51Not quite as bad as feared, although every time I tried to take a nap/sleep in, I ended up having to field a call from a Baby Boomer.
UGH.
I mean, it was only twice. But both times it was about stuff that my uncle was trying to get rid of. First his wife called me (after he called my phone and couldn't get through, she called B1's phone, and B1 WOKE ME UP to give me the phone). And then mum called me WHILE I WAS TRYING TO SLEEP IN ON SUNDAY MORNING.
IDK. I try to sleep, it never manages to be enough lately. Like I'm functional, just tired. Also, headaches a lot. And my temporomandibular joint has been giving me trouble. It feels fine most of them time, but biting down on things is a bit dodgy.
Tomorrow, I'm going to watch the superbowl with some guys from church. It's annual, and just one of those Things That I Do. Three of the four friends who usually come along and watch have checked in with me to see if I'm coming. And as for the fourth friend, I'll just say "curiosity is not his love language".
Oof, I might go lie down and do some reading until I fall asleep.
I did write about 1200 words today, though. That was good.

watch Bridgerton with me?
6/2/26 11:55Is there anyone who'd be interested in co-watching Bridgerton S4 with me?
I want to watch it, I just need to schedule time to watch it, and have someone else metaphorically "on hand" to keep me from rushing off and doing something else.
Yes, we would have to do some tricksy scheduling to manage it if you're in the (usual) locations of Europe/the US. I'm happy to try to work something out.
