Welcome to femmeremix!

Are you into stories about women*? Have you written stories about women? Would you like to read and write more of them? Would you like to read and write stories based on other people's stories? Yes? Motherfucking yes? Well then, this is the remix for you!

We all know how much fun remix can be, but we also know that it can be frustrating sometimes, especially for those of us who generally don't write slash and/or write a lot of stories about women. We get matched, we're really excited about it, and then our remixee has only written slash. Or stories go up, we're really excited about it, and our remixer has skipped over the 99 awesome stories about women and remixed the 1 not-so-awesome story about men. This remix offers people a chance to focus on women.

*"Women" here is loosely defined to include canonical alien/trans/non-genderbinary characters who identify as female. It does not include Rule 63/"always-a-girl" characters. She-Hulk is in, Brucella Banner is not.

***

Remix Rules

We use the old Remix Redux rules for qualifying in a fandom for matching: you must have completed at least THREE stories of 500 words or more, or FIVE stories of 100 words or more, with at least one female character who is or can be centralized. (Again, "female" is defined as "any character who canonically identifies as female.") Crossovers, rule 63, and previous remixes cannot be counted in those numbers.

You are permitted to designate one (1) "safe story" which cannot be remixed. It does not have to be from your fandoms in which you matched. You will also be asked to designate all previous remixes you have written, as these cannot be remixed in this challenge. You may choose not to have a safe story, but you must list all previous remixes in your sign-up.

You will be writing a story which prominently features at least one female character. Your remix must be at least 1000 words and must be submitted by the assignment deadline. You can choose any of the remixee's stories except previous remixes they have written and their safe story, which should be marked in their sign-up.

Remixers are NOT permitted to change pairings or to change the genders of the characters in the story they choose. Because of this, we would like to encourage you to choose stories that do not focus on M/M pairings. For example, while you may remix that Steve/Tony story from Pepper's POV, you cannot make Steve and Tony women, and you must keep the pairing (though it does not have to be central to the story you write). And while that doesn't go against the rules of the challenge, it does go against the spirit of it.

Any stories which are not properly submitted by the deadline will be defaulted by the mods and sent to the pinch-hit list. This includes incomplete and/or placeholder stories, as well as any stories which do not adhere to the remix rules. It does not include stories which have been granted extensions prior to the deadline. If your story is defaulted by the mods, you will be banned from all future femmeremix challenges.

If you need an extension before the deadline, please contact the mods via email at femmeremix@gmail.com.

Nominations

You may nominate up to five fandoms in which you have written at least three stories of 500 words or more OR at least five stories of 100 words or more which include one or more women. Please do not nominate fandoms in which you do not meet these qualifications as this is how we will determine which fandoms to use for matching.

Our intention is to ensure that we are able to match you with a remixer who can write in at least one of your fandoms and that you have enough stories that they will have several to choose from. By limiting the nominations to qualifying fandoms we should be able to match everyone with very little jerry-rigging.

*

Sign-Ups

Because this is a remix rather than a gift exchange, we have slightly different terminology for sign-ups.

Your "requests" are the fandoms in which you qualify for matching. However, your remixer is not required to remix stories only from your "requested" fandoms.

You must request at least one nominated fandom in which you qualify for matching (3+ stories of 500+ words or 5+ stories of 100+ words). You may list up to five fandoms. If you qualify in more than five nominated fandoms, choose the ones you would most like to have remixed.

Your "offers" are the nominated fandoms in which you are offering to write remixes. These do not have be the same fandoms as those you have requested. You must offer at least three fandoms and may offer up to ten.

Remix FAQ

What is a remix?
A remix is where you take another author's story and rewrite it! You can change the POV, you can expand on a specific scene, you can write a prequel or a sequel or a timestamp! Think of it like fanfiction of a fanfic. Pretty much anything goes, except character-bashing and altering the plot so much of the story that its source is unrecognizable.

Is this a femslash-only remix?
NOPE! This remix focuses on women, so some (many?) of the stories will likely be femslash, but your story is not required to be femslash. All pairings and gen are welcome, though we do encourage people to focus on het, femslash, and gen rather than dudeslash.

What do you mean by qualifying fandoms? How do I know if I qualify?
Qualifying fandoms are what we use to match remixers with remixees. Since the challenge is to rewrite someone else's story, you must have multiple stories for your remixer to choose from. Because we anticipate a relatively small number of participants, we've chosen to use the original Remix Redux* rules, which means you must have at least THREE COMPLETE stories of 500 words or more OR FIVE COMPLETE stories of 100 words or more to qualify in a fandom. Because this is a female-focused challenge, those stories must include at least one woman who is either already central to the story or who can be centralized.

Example: You have written three 500-word stories for Mad Max: Fury Road and one of them focuses on Furiosa, one on the Many Mothers, and the third features Max with Capable as a secondary character, congratulations, you qualify for Mad Max! You've also written five 100-word stories for Pacific Rim, with two about Mako Mori and Raleigh Becket, one character study of Yancy Becket, and two drabbles about Hermann Gottlieb, so alas, you do not qualify for Pacific Rim.

What if I qualify in an umbrella fandom but not in the narrower fandoms included in it?
For the purpose of matching, stories which require knowledge of one or more canons are considered crossovers. This includes most instances where two canons take place within the same universe, though there are some exceptions.

Example: You have written three 500-word stories that use characters from both Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion. You do not qualify in either fandom because we cannot guarantee that you will match on both Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion.

The biggest exception to this rule is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has multiple interrelated canons. To simplify the MCU as best as possible while still allowing for the prolific overlap of many of these canons, we have divided it thusly:

The Avengers (Marvel Movies) — Includes all stories involving characters who are currently part of the Avengers team: Avengers 1-2, Ant Man, Iron Man 1-3, Captain America 1-3, and Thor 1-2.
Agent Carter (TV) — Includes both the TV show and the short film.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (TV)
Daredevil (TV)
Guardians of the Galaxy (Movies)
Jessica Jones (TV)

My remixee has written this other fandom I really love, but they didn't qualify in it. Do I have to stick with the fandom we matched on?
NOPE! As long as the stories in the non-qualifying fandom are not previous remixes or the remixee's safe story, you can remix any one of them!

Example: You got matched on Mad Max: Fury Road, but you see that the author you've been assigned has also written some fic for Pacific Rim. They didn't have enough stories with women in Pacific Rim to qualify for matching, but none of those stories are the author's safe story or previous remixes. You can totally rewrite that Mako/Raleigh story, yay!

You said we couldn't count crossovers/rule 63 in our qualifying fandoms. Does that mean we can't remix those stories either?
NOPE! You can totally remix those stories so long as your remix focuses on a female character! We don't include those categories in matching because not everyone is comfortable with writing crossovers and/or AUs of that sort. This also prevents us from accidentally matching you with someone whose stories are all crossovers with a fandom you don't know. But if you see a crossover you want to rewrite, have at it!

Example: You matched with someone on Supernatural, but you see that they've written several crossovers featuring Lord of the Rings and Firefly. You love both those things and think they are awesome together. You choose to write a badass remix featuring Eowyn and Zoe being awesome lady warriors together!

You have a lot of rules about crossovers, rule 63, and previous remixes. Why?
99% of our rules are to streamline the matching process as much as possible and to do everything we can to guarantee that all remixers will have at least three stories to choose from when we send out assignments. We don't allow crossovers because we can't promise that the assigned remixer will be familiar with both fandoms. We don't allow rule 63 stories because we can't promise that the assigned remixer will be comfortable writing rule 63. We don't allow previous remixes because those stories are already remixes of another work and permissions from the original authors can be complicated.

That said, this rule is in place purely for matching. Once you have been matched, you are free to choose any story by your remixee except their safe story and their previous remixes.

I'm still confused.
Still have questions? You can contact the mods via PM! We are [personal profile] theladyscribe and [personal profile] tielan, though it's probably best if you message us via email at femmeremix at gmail.

*We are not actually affiliated with Remix Redux, but it is the granddaddy of all fanfic remixes. Without it, this remix would not exist. If you are still kind of confused about remixing in general, we encourage you to check out their FAQ.

Hi, I'm excited about this! I was telling a friend about it, and they assumed from the name that it was a remix specifically for femmeslash writers. I just wanted to mention that, because I think it might be helpful when promoting the fest to make it clear that it's open to all female charater-centric stories, whether het, gen, or femslash (if I'm reading things correctly.)

So I have over 500 fics and if I sign up for only the fandoms I'm interested in having remixed, it doesn't matter, the remixer can choose anything I wrote at all but 1 safe story, a remix, or a WIP?

Why do we sign up with fandoms then? Genuinely not getting this or why it's a good thing.

I get matching. What I don't get is negating matching. I have written in dozens of fandoms and I love remix exchanges, but I don't feel like requesting every fandom every exchange and I definitely don't understand the plus side of letting someone ignore my remix request for a different fandom or why my recip would be happy with me ignoring theirs.

Is there any way to open up two of my pseuds but not another or will it also be one URL only like Remix Redux?

In short, you answered my comment on my question, not my question, which was can they really ignore my signup request and do any of my fics at all but 1 safe story, a remix, or a WIP and why is this a good thing? I honestly don't get it.

Not a mod, but in Remix Redux, the answer is yes, the remixer can pick any story of yours that is not excluded by the rules. Whether that's a good thing or not is up to you.

The thing is, Remix isn't a gift exchange. The remixer isn't writing a story to your taste, or even necessarily taking input on which of your stories you'd really like to see redone. This isn't a present to you.

You're offering to let someone else play around with your work; allowing them to pick from the widest possible selection makes it easier on them to choose something they like and can enjoy remixing. In return, you get to play with someone else's work and have the widest possible selection to choose from of their stuff.

I love seeing what I can come up with, and what other people can do with what I wrote. I think it's fun to see what they choose and how they choose to use it. But then again, I have a standing blanket-permission policy on all of my works -- ie, anyone who wants to remix any of my stuff at any time is welcome to do so -- because I enjoy that.

I appreciate your thought in chiming in, but no, I am no stranger to remixes; yes, I enjoy seeing what people come up with; no, I didn't feel they were writing the remix as a "present" to me; no, I feel no need to open up literally anything at all for this particular exchange except 1 fic out of 500+; yes, it's a weird rule; and yes, what I write is with the recipient and what they want remixed in mind regardless of whether I'm obligated to honor what they're offering.

If I wasn't currently sick, I would work a little harder to get two of my pseuds in because I have a ton of commentfic I'd love to see what people would do with and a couple fandoms I'm only eligible in if I count my drabbles, but I am and can't be bothered, so I stuck to signing up with one pseud that slightly limits my options.

That whole issue of you have 99 great fics and they pick the one that leaves you going, okay, what was the point of that? I don't feel like experiencing it and the more fic you write, the more likely to have that happen.

So as much as I appreciate what remixes are about, that doesn't mean I was expecting to sign up with one set of things and have literally everything I DIDN'T sign up with thrown in the kitty. So I figured out my workaround so I'm only signing up with what I want to. It's not being selfish, making the remix about me, or not wanting to see what someone else will do with my stuff. I LOVE seeing what other people do with my stuff, and I have various blanket permissions on all of my fic and a couple exclusions.

Any exchange is neither all about the recipient nor all about the writer. I was simply trying to understand this extremely weird variation on a sign-up, which the mod explained well. In Remix Madness, it was you signed up as an author entity rather than works/fandoms (because it didn't require matching) and this is a variation of THAT with matching. Got it. Workarounds allowed. Great.

I'm also apparently crabby as family have noted since I got sick about a week ago, so sorry for any of that showing through. I'm trying to be a decent person while also being slightly functional, but apparently, I'm not as nice to talk to when I'm sick. Apologies on that front.

Sign-ups can be edited after making them, yes? Because I want to sign up now, then maybe go write a couple more ficlets so as to qualify in two more fandoms (for a total of five).

(And hell if I know what I want to offer...) Figured that out, though not sure if anyone else qualifies and wants to play in anything I want to offer... (except the one that's already on the sign-up summary)

Also! [community profile] pod_together and [community profile] pt_lightning stories. In Fairy Tales and Related Fandoms, I have four. I am counting three of those towards my qualifying in that fandom, because I wrote the words, and not the fourth, because I podficced. Is that the right way to do it?

This sounds like a lot of fun, but I wanted to check -- I've written about canon female characters, Rule 63 characters, OCs, etc. Does having written the latter two disqualify me from this, even though I've written enough stories about the first group?

Two questions:

1.) While I see why OCs can't count into the qualifying stories, does that also disqualify fics that feature both female canon characters and OCs?

2.) Is it okay to link to my AO3 page as the masterlist, or do I have to compile some separate list?

Thank you!

I was wondering if in future rounds it would be permissible to have more than 1 safe story, depending on how many story one has authored? Something like a 5% rule or something similar? Meaning that if we have written 100 qualifying stories, that we could choose 5 stories to not be remixed?

I think it is unfair to a person who has, as mentioned previously, 500+ fics as opposed to someone who has "only" around 50 or less, if the remixer can simply choose any story safe for WIPs, other remixes, and only 1 safe story regardless of what the author signs up with.

I also think it would make it easier for the remixer if they knew they had less stories to read through to decide which they want to remix. :)

Do our fics have to be hosted on a particular site? Or does that not matter as long as they are publicly viewable?
