The 2016 Collection has been closed. We'll be checking for completed works in the last batch of stories posted. Once that is done and any necessary pinch-hits have been assigned, we will reopen the collection to allow treats and edits while we await the arrival of pinch-hits. There will be another post when this happens.

I will be closing the collection at approximately 9PM EDT tonight (this is a change from the original deadline of 8PM, due to a real-life obligation).

Anyone who has not published a completed story will be defaulted at that time.

If you have posted your story as a draft, you MUST publish before the deadline so that we can check that it is complete. We cannot view works in drafts, and will therefore assume they are incomplete.

Pinch-hits will be sent out as soon as possible after tonight's deadline. The collection will be reopened for posting pinch-hits and treats tomorrow morning at approximately 9AM EDT.

If you find that you are not able to complete your assignment, please default ASAP by going to your assignment on AO3 and clicking "Default" so that we can assign a pinch-hitter.

When assignments are due, we will close the collection briefly to check posted assignments and to compile the list of needed pinch-hits. Anyone who has posted a placeholder/obviously incomplete story or who has not posted a story at all (with the exception of pinch-hits assigned after July 22) will be defaulted. If you are defaulted by the mods at the deadline, you will not be allowed to participate in future FemmeRemixes.

Any pinch-hits generated from now on will be due on July 29 at 8PM EDT.

Once posted stories are confirmed and needed pinch-hits have been generated, we will re-open the collection to allow pinch-hits and any treats you might wish to write. You may also make any edits you wish at that time. The collection will be closed again on July 29, at which time all outstanding pinch-hits and treats should be posted.

This is the official reminder post that stories are due on July 24 at 8PM EDT US. If you haven't started on your fic, you might want to get on that!

This is also a reminder that if the mods default you at the July 24 deadline, you will be banned from future femmeremix exchanges. If it looks like you will not be able to complete your story by the deadline, please default ASAP. This will make it much easier for us to find a pinch-hitter and make it possible for you to participate in the future!

Assignments are out! They should arrive in your inbox soon. If you did not receive an email, check your spam filter, or you can find your assignment by going to the My Assignments page for the AO3 account you signed up with (http://archiveofourown.org/users/USERNAME/assignments). If there is no FemmeRemix 2016 assignment listed there, please contact the mods at femmeremix(at)gmail.com ASAP.

Just a few reminders: you may choose to remix any of the stories available at the link your author has provided except previous remixes and their safe story. You must write a story of at least 1000 words which focuses on one or more female characters. You cannot change pairings or completely disregard the original plot, though you can change the setting, POV, and/or scope of the story.

Stories are due on July 24 at 8PM EDT (US) and will be revealed on July 31 or as soon as the last pinch-hit arrives (whichever is second). Authors will be revealed on August 7.

We will have an informal check-in on the DW comm and via tumblr at the end of June to remind everyone of the upcoming due date.

If you must drop out for any reason, please do so earlier rather than later. Remember that if you are defaulted by the mods you will be banned from future femmeremix challenges.

Sign-ups will close in just over 24 hours, at 8PM EDT (US), Saturday. If you have not yet signed up, now is the time to do so.

Now is also a good time to double-check the Sign-up Summary to see if there are any fandoms you are interested in offering to remix. Please pay special attention to those fandoms listed with either 1 request and 0 offers or 1 request and 1 offer, as they are the ones which will be most difficult to match. If you are able to write in any of those fandoms, the mods would greatly appreciate it if you could edit your offers to include them.

Once sign-ups have closed, we will start the matching process. Our calendar says that assignments will be out June 5, but if matching goes quickly (and it is likely to), we will send out assignments earlier than that. An earlier assignment send-out will not affect due dates.

Pinch-hit signups will remain open. Pinch-hits will go out as-needed and will be assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. All pinch-hitters will be expected to follow the remix rules (1000+ word remix about at least one female character). As with the regular assignments, pinch-hits are due on July 24. Pinch-hits which are sent out after July 22 will be due on July 29.

Sign-ups are coming along nicely - so far we have 33 participants!

We have also had some questions about writing treats for the challenge. Last year, we did not have that as an option, but this year, we've decided to allow it. Treats are opt-in, so if you are not interested in having more than one story remixed, you do not need to do anything.

If you are interested in receiving remix treats, please leave a comment on this post using the following format:

You may also indicate that you're open to treats in your signup details - signups will be visible to anyone.

ETA: For clarification, treaters are NOT required to remix a story from a qualifying fandom. Anything that is female-focused which is not a previous remix or a safe story is allowed. Treats should also follow the constraints set out in the remix challenge -- that is, all treats should be focused on women (for our given definition of "women"). That said, treats are not subject to the 1000-word minimum.

ETA2: Another clarification: non-participants are allowed to sign up for remix treats. However, we cannot guarantee that you will receive a remix unless you sign up for the challenge through AO3. If you are a non-participant, we would like to encourage you to sign up for the pinch-hit list as well. You are also more than welcome to treat as much as you like.

The treat deadline is July 29 -- the same day as our final pinch-hit deadline.

Sign-Ups Now Open!

Sign-ups are now open.

This is mentioned on the sign-up page, but as a reminder, your "requests" are the fandoms in which you qualify for matching. Your "offers" are the fandoms in which you want to remix someone else's works.

You must "request" at least one fandom and may request up to five. You must "offer" at least three fandoms and may offer up to ten.

If you are requesting/offering with more obscure fandoms, you may want to keep an eye on the Signup Summary Page, which shows how many requests and offers have been made in each fandom. You may also want to encourage your friends to either sign up for the challenge themselves or sign up as pinch-hitters, as lower requests and offers can make it harder for us to match you.

If your fandom has a community/group/etc., now is the time to tell them about the challenge!

Pinch-hit sign-ups are also open.

Pinch-hits will go out as-needed and will be assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. Nominations Query III

First, an update re: previous queries.

We are allowing the nomination for "Hunger Games Series - All Media Types." Since there is relatively little difference between the plots of book series and the film series, it was decided that most remixers would be familiar enough with all characters to remix either media type.

We are splitting Star Wars into three distinct fandoms: "Star Wars Original Trilogy," "Star Wars Prequel Trilogy," and "Star Wars Sequel Trilogy." We had originally accepted "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," but this will be changed to "Star Wars Sequel Trilogy." Currently, that is the only Star Wars fandom nominated, so if you plan to offer fic about the prequels or the original trilogy for the remix, please nominate them before this weekend!

And we have one more query:

Wicked - All Media Types: Because Wicked the book and Wicked the musical are two very distinct fandoms with very different plots, we need the nominator to clarify which fandom they are nominating. Please either alter your nomination or leave a comment here so that one of the mods can alter it for you. Thank you!

Nominations Query II

We've had some questions pop up in the last couple days re: nominations, and they are ones which require participant input. If you are likely to request or offer any of these fandoms at sign-ups, we would greatly appreciate your comments. As always, mods will have final say, but we want to make informed decisions.

The Hunger Games: Currently, there is a nomination for "Hunger Games Series - All Media Types." If we accept this as-is, then anyone who has written a combination of book-based and movie-based stories which meet our matching criteria is eligible to use this fandom for requests. However, anyone who offers to remix this fandom must be prepared to write a remix for stories which may be based on the books or may be based on the films.

Neither of the mods are familiar enough with the books or films to know whether there are significant differences between the two media types that would make it difficult-to-impossible for someone familiar with one to remix a story based on the other. If there are not significant differences, we would be amenable to accepting the nomination as-is rather than requiring separate nominations for "Hunger Games Series - Suzanne Collins" and "Hunger Games Series - Movies."

Star Wars: At this point, the only Star Wars film currently nominated is Star Wars: The Force Awakens. However, we had a query about whether the films would be taken as solo films, as separate series (IE, prequels, original trilogy, new series), or as a single umbrella fandom. We are leaning toward accepting these as separate series, with The Force Awakens as a one-off since the challenge will end before any more films are released. We would also be willing to accept the films as an umbrella fandom if there is a consensus among participants.

The FemmeRemix 2016 tagset is now up and nominations are now live.

Please only nominate fandoms in which you have written three or more stories of 500 words or more OR five stories of 100 words or more about or involving canonical female characters. This is to help us streamline matching.

As a reminder, here are the rules regarding crossovers and megafandoms:

For the purpose of matching, stories which require knowledge of one or more canons are considered crossovers. This includes most instances where two canons take place within the same universe, though there are some exceptions.

Example: You have written three 500-word stories that use characters from both Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion. You do not qualify in either fandom because we cannot guarantee that you will match on both Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion.

The biggest exception to this rule is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has multiple interrelated canons. To simplify the MCU as best as possible while still allowing for the prolific overlap of many of these canons, we have divided it thusly:

The Avengers (Marvel Movies) — Includes all stories involving characters who are currently part of the Avengers team: Ant Man, Avengers 1-2, Iron Man 1-3, Captain America 1-3, and Thor 1-2.
Daredevil (TV)
Agent Carter (TV) — Includes both the TV show and the short film.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (TV)
Guardians of the Galaxy (Movies)
Jessica Jones (TV)
